The Sacrament of Baptism

 “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20).

The sacrament of  Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door that gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from the bondage of original sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of th eBody of Christ and thus  incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission. Baptism is necessary for salvation.

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR BAPTISM

For children under the age of five (5)

 

Parents are obliged to see to it that infants are baptized within the first weeks after birth. As soon as possible after birth, or even before it, parents need to go to the parish office and request the sacrament for their child. Parents must properly prepare for the celebration of their child’s baptism and those parents anticipating baptism of a child should meet these basic requirements:

 

1. The child must be registered for baptism in the parish office one month prior to the planned date. Parents will need to bring the birth certificate at the time of the registration. The date and time of the actual baptism will be set at the time of registration.

 

2. Parents must be registered parishioners of St. Helen of the Cross Roman Catholic Church. If they do not reside in the area, a letter of permission and recommendation from their pastor will be required at the time of registration.

 

3. The Catholic Church requires the parents to bring one godfather and/or one godmother to assist them in rearing the child Catholic. Only one godparent is necessary. Parents may bring no more than two (2) godparents.

 

4. Godparents must be Catholic, at least 16 years of age, baptized, confirmed, and have received First Holy Communion; proof must be presented (certificates).

   - If they are not registered parishioners of St. Helen, they must bring a letter of permission and recommendation from their pastor. Because they are to be examples of Christian living for the child, godparents must be in full communion with the Catholic Church.

- If married, they must be married in the Catholic Church and present proof (certificate or affidavit). Civil marriage is not recognized by the Church as a Sacramental Marriage.

 -If non-married, they cannot be in common-law union (living together!) as that represents a grave sin and a bad example for the child.

 

5.They must attend Mass regularly and participate in the sacramental life of the Church.

 

6.The parents and godparents of the child must attend baptismal preparation class before the baptismal date. Failure to attend class will result in postponement of the child’s baptism.

 

7. The parish will provide the candle, and  baptismal bib (no need to purchase).

 

8. Baptisms are held on the 2^nd Sunday (English) and 3^rd Sunday (Spanish) of the month.

 

9. A donation of $50 dollars per child is requested and must be paid 2 weeks before the baptism celebration. And

a  donation of $80 dollars per child is requested if the baptism is to be held at a different time or day than those described above.

 

 

 

 

 El Sacramento del Bautismo

 

"Vayan, y hagan discípulos en todas las naciones, bautizándolos  en el Nombre del Padre, del Hijo

y del Espíritu Santo, y enseñenles a obedecer todo lo que les he mandado a ustedes." ( Mateo 28:19-20).

 

 

El  sacramento del bautismo es fundamental para una vida cristiana, e s el pasaje a a la vida en el espiritu y la puerta que da acceso a los demás sacramentos. Por medio del bautismo nos libramos de las ataduras del pecado original y renacemos como hijos de Dios. Nos incorporamos al Cuerpo de Cristo y así nos hacemos miembros de la Iglesia y compartimos su misión.

 

REQUISITOS PARA EL BAUTISMO

Para niños menores de cinco (5) años de edad.

 

Los padres del  niño (a)  tienen la obligación de asegurarse que los niños sean bautizados inmediatamente después de su nacimiento y  tendrán que pasar a la oficina parroquial a solicitar el sacramento del bautismo de su hijo/a lo más pronto posible. Los padres  deben prepararse apropiadamente para la celebración del bautismo de su hijo/a y aquellos  que están anticipando el bautismo de su hijo/a deben cumplir con los siguientes requisitos básicos:

 

1. El niño (a) debe registrarse para el bautismo en la oficina parroquial un mes antes de la fecha planeada. Los padres de familia tendrán que traer el certificado de nacimiento el día en que lo registre. La fecha y hora del bautismo se le dará al registrarse.

 

2. Los padres tendrán que estar registrados en la Iglesia Católica de Santa Elena de la Cruz, si ellos no viven en el área tendrán que pedir una carta de permiso y recomendación de su párroco y presentarla al registrarse.

 

3. La Iglesia Católica requiere que los padres  presenten un padrino y/o una madrina para asistir en enseñar al niño a ser Católico. Solamente un padrino/madrina es necesario. No podrán traer más de dos (2) padrinos.

 

4. Los padrinos tienen que ser católicos y por lo menos tener 16 años de edad, bautizados, confirmados y haber recibido la Primera Comunión, tendrán que presentar prueba (certificados).

- Si no están registrados como feligreses de esta parroquia, tendrán que presentar una carta de permiso y recomendación de su párroco. Ya que los padrinos deben ser un buen ejemplo para el niño/a a vivir como cristianos, los padrinos tendrán que estar en plena comunión con la Iglesia Católica.

-Si están casados, tiene que ser  por la Iglesia Católica y presentar prueba (certificado o affidávit). El matrimonio civil no es reconocido por la Iglesia Católica como Matrimonio Sacramental.

-Si no están casados, no pueden estar viviendo en unión libre (¡viviendo juntos!) ya que representa un pecado grave y un mal ejemplo para el infante.

 

5.Tendrán que asistir a Misa frecuentemente y participar en la vida sacramental de la Iglesia.

 

6. Los padres y padrinos del niño/a tendrán que asistir a la clase de preparación bautismal antes de la fecha del bautismo. El no asistir a la clase pospondrá la fecha del bautismo.

 

7. La parroquia  les dará la vela y el babero bautismal (No es necesario comprar).

 

8. Los bautismos son cada 2do domingo (inglés) y 3er domingo (español) del mes.

 

9. Se pide una donación de $50 dólares por cada niño/a, la cual deberá ser cubierta  2 semanas antes de la celebración del bautizo. Sí el bautismo se lleva a cabo en una fecha u horario distinto antes mencionado, se pide una donación de $80 dólares por cada niño/a.
